This lesson illustrates why radar in the Relative Motion mode does not display the actual heading or True Motion of targets when making way through the water.

Standing in the same place on the bridge of your ship while it is tied to the dock, you see the vessel off the starboard bow.

The vessel maintains the same distance (constant range) while crossing your bow.

Since your vessel is not moving, your vessel's radar would display the True Course of the vessel ahead.
